The mighty Susquehanna River flows from Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, NY, through early industrial towns, farmlands and coal mining areas before providing half of the fresh water to the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is still one of the world's most productive estuaries, though its fish, shellfish and wildlife populations have declined due to pollution. The floodprone river and its tributaries are polluted with agricultural and storm water runoff, sewage and abandoned mine drainage.
The Delaware, the largest undammed river east of the Mississippi, travels from the Catskill and Pocono Mountains, crosses the Kittatinny Ridge of the Appalachians, flows between Pennsylvania and New Jersey and empties into the great Delaware Bay. It provides drinking water for 18 million, including half of New York City. The Delaware and its tributaries are impacted by an expanding urban and suburban population, storm water runoff and toxic industrial spills. Its estuary has high levels of chemical contaminants, threatening its fish and wildlife.
The Cora L Brooks Foundation provides assistance to various not-for-profit organizations that work to alleviate these significant ecological problems within the watersheds. |
